eTwinning in initial teacher education as an international collaboration platform: a scoping review

Abstract

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) faces a range of challenges to prepare educators for increasingly globalized classrooms. This scoping review examines how eTwinning, Europe’s largest educational collaboration platform, supports pre-service teacher development. We systematically searched peer-reviewed publications through May 2025 across Scopus, Web of Science (WoS) and ERIC. Our analysis of 15 studies reveals evidence that the platform enhances digital competence, intercultural awareness, and professional identity formation among pre-service teachers. The research shows concentrated activity in 2023, highlighting both growing interest and the field’s emerging nature. Key findings demonstrate the effectiveness of eTwinning in developing collaborative pedagogical competence and global educator identity. However, critical gaps persist: no longitudinal studies track long-term impacts, subject-specific research remains limited, and methodological approaches need diversification. These findings support strategic integration of the platform into teacher preparation programs while identifying urgent research priorities.

Edward A. Lockhart, PhD. is an Associate Professor in the Education Studies at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain. He holds a PhD in Foreign Language Teaching and has extensive experience in teacher education, foreign language pedagogy, and educational innovation. His academic work focuses on Initial Teacher Education, English language teaching, digital pedagogy, and international collaborative learning. His recent publications and conference contributions address topics such as eTwinning, role-playing games and artificial intelligence in education, collaborative learning structures, storytelling, and the development of pre-service teachers. Additionally, he has worked as a teacher educator and international consultant, contributing to professional development initiatives in Spain and across Europe.

Carol Barriuso Rayo, PhD Candidate at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Campus Sescelades Tarragona, Spain

Carol Barriuso is an educator, teacher trainer, and researcher specialised in language education, international collaboration, and teaching methodologie. She is currently pursuing PhD in the field of applied linguistics. With extensive experience in media and digital literacy, language learning and Project Based Learning, she has coordinated multiple national and European projects. As an eTwinning ambassador and moderator, and a university lecturer, she actively contributes to the professional development of educators through training, mentoring, and research. She collaborates with the European Commission on key initiatives, including refugee support actions, media literacy, and educational policy development. She is a consultant for the Council of Europe in foreign language education and in the framework of Education Strategy in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Education.
